Gino Sarfatti for Lightolier Astral Atomic Sputnik Brass Ceiling Fixture, 1950s

Mid-century modern brass “Astral” Sputnik ceiling fixture designed by Gino Sarfatti and produced by Lightolier in the United States, circa 1950s. Part of Sarfatti’s celebrated Astral lighting series, the fixture features a compact starburst composition with eight radiating arms extending from a central polished brass sphere. Each arm terminates in a cylindrical socket sleeve designed for candelabra bulbs, creating the iconic atomic-age silhouette associated with early space-age design. The underside retains the original Lightolier inspection label. The fixture is constructed of solid brass, which has developed a warm natural patina consistent with age. The smaller Astral ceiling mount models are increasingly sought after for their ability to deliver the dramatic Sputnik form while remaining suitable for rooms with lower ceiling heights. This example represents an earlier production variant of the Astral series, identifiable by its machined spherical brass hub with arms threaded directly into the center sphere rather than attached with later set-screw construction. These early models reflect the higher-quality manufacturing typical of Lightolier’s mid-1950s production. An excellent example of American mid-century modern lighting influenced by Sarfatti’s celestial design language.
